How it was built

Stage 01 / 05

Nozzles and manways go into the shell courses before they go on the stack, while a course can still be worked from both sides. The welder works downhand and can get at the back of the joint. By the time a course goes on the stack the nozzles are already in it.

The nozzles go in before the course goes on the stack.
Stage 02 / 05

The first course goes on timber packing. The next comes down on it under the crane, landed and held while the seam is tacked, and then welded out.

Stage 03 / 05

The large tanks go together the other way up. The shell is held up on packing and the next course goes on underneath it, with a row of temporary clips round the inside holding it while the seams are welded out.

Those clips and the lifting lugs come off when the shell is done, and the places where they were welded are dressed back level with the plate.

Stage 04 / 05

Lifting is done on the overhead crane, using slings and a spreader beam. Bottom plates are cut and fitted on the shop floor.

Stage 05 / 05

In the shop the welding is done under cover and under a crane.
