Engine room piping and machinery installation

Machinery on resilient mounts, and the seawater, bilge and fuel lines that connect it. The mounts went down first; the piping followed, through a compartment that was already full.

How it was built

Stage 01 / 04

The mounts go down before anything else. We land the machine on them all at once, then set each mount so it takes its share of the load and sits within the deflection the maker allows. The alignment is checked and recorded before the first flange is made up, and again once the lines are connected.

Stage 02 / 04

The drawing gives the route; the dimensions come off the steel. By the time the piping starts the space is full, so we build the valves, the strainer and the branches up on one frame outside the compartment and land the group as a unit, with the bolt holes matching and the flange faces square. Set out that way, somebody standing in front of it can reach every handwheel.

Stage 03 / 04

Resiliently mounted machinery moves, and the hull works at sea. Flexible hoses take that movement at the machine connections. On the runs, mechanical couplings take up misalignment, and we anchor and guide the pipe either side of them so the coupling is not left carrying the line.

Stage 04 / 04

We set the valve groups out to keep the tank access clear, because the covers have to come off in service. Open ends are capped whenever work stops on a line, and the system is blanked at its boundaries for the pressure test. Each line is tagged to the drawing as it is finished.
