Offshore rope access welding

Welding on the outside of an offshore platform, carried out on rope access. There is no scaffold and no basket over the side, so the welder reaches the joint on ropes and works from the harness.

How it was done

Stage 01 / 02

The platform has no quay and no road. Crew, tools and consumables arrive by vessel or helicopter and stay for the shift, and the working window is set by wind and sea state rather than by the programme.

Stage 02 / 02

Welding is carried out from the harness, on a working line and a backup rigged from the structure above, with the team working in pairs. The joint is prepared before the arc is struck and completed in short runs. The return clamp is placed on the work close to the joint — over water the return path is part of the safety case, not a detail.
