Grate bar replacement

Grate bars replaced inside the furnace of a waste-to-energy plant during the outage. The old bars came out one row at a time, cut free where they were seized, and the new ones went back set to the specified gap.

How it was done

Stage 01 / 02

The furnace is cold by the time we go in, but it is not clean. Everything inside is coated in fly ash and combustion residue, so the crew works in disposable coveralls and P3 respirators, and the suits come off at the door. Entry is under permit, with the space ventilated and the atmosphere monitored.

Stage 02 / 02

The bars sit in rows across the grate, and after a full run most of them are seized in place. They come out one row at a time — cut free where they will not move, lifted out by hand and stacked. The new ones go back set to the gap the maker specifies, because that gap is how the primary air reaches the bed.
